Overview

The SoFA District (So. First Area) flaunts a vivacious bar scene and a great mix of bars offerring venues for local musical artists on Thursdays. You may even stumble over one of the numerous celebrations held in SoFA, for example, South First Fridays Art Walk, the SubZERO Festival, summer Street Mrkts and SoFA Street Fairs.

Enjoy local music at Caffe Frescati

Caffe Frescati

On Thursday nights, you can enjoy some a local open mic put on by some talented people in the SJ area.

It can be a little hard to find a spot to sit, but even on the outside patio, you'll see several performers rehearsing and strangers grouping together to practice their vocals.

One tip is to wait around on the outside if you can't find seating, as people are coming and going at all times. You'll also be able to mingle with some of the local talent.

The Continental Bar Lounge & Patio

The Continental Bar Lounge & Patio

The Continental Bar Lounge & Patio is a must stop for anyone passing by. From the drinks, to the fireplace patio, it's hard to not to have a good time here. They have a DJ playing most nights along with themed days, but even if you're not into the music, you can scoot yourself to the secret back patio where they play films and have fireplaces to relax near.

The must try drink is the Scottish Old Fashioned. They have two varieties, one sweeter and the other smokier - we prefer the smoky variation, as it's great to sip on while enjoying the fireplace in the back. Be sure to check their website as well to see what nights host which events.

Forager Tasting Room & Eatery

Forager Tasting Room & Eatery

The Forager tasting room is wide event space that hosts an awesome atmosphere to work or relax. They have tables along with Wi-fi and the space is so large that you're guarunteed to have focus wherever you decide to perch yourself.

Grab a cocktail in an underground speak easy

Haberdasher

Built on the remains of Single Barrel, a bar reminiscent of old speak easies, The Haberdasher inherits most of the interior of the previous underground speak easy, though it is surprisingly more welcoming and a little bit noiser.

It's not very busy on Tuesdays or Wednesdays but it can be a little hard to get a drink at the small bar that's available sometimes. For cocktails, try their Moscow Mule on tap and grab a picture of the ice cube - it's just so... clean.

Tac-Oh!

Tac-Oh!

If you're not rolling with a crew and maybe are on a date to impress, stop by Tac-Oh! for a more upscale dining experience - just be warned that the portions compared to the other street options (La Vics and Iguanas) aren't as satisfying or fitting for someone who's spent most of their time getting drunk.

Loiter and enjoy loud noises from Cafe Stritch

Cafe Stritch

Cafe Stritch and Cafe Frescati both host the best mic nights to be seen on this street, but to avoid competition they do so on separate days. Cafe Stritch seems to have practice sessions that can be heard from across the street, from which there happens to be a very nice spot to sit down and chill.

Drink and hacky sack at the Uproar Brewing company

Uproar Brewing Company

As one Yelp user puts it, "You can really feel the love in this place"! The vibe here is very similar to the market street on the opposite side of DTSJ. They even have a public hackey throw table, which is a little like beer pong but without the mess.

It goes without saying that they have an awesome beer selection but the beers can be a little on the pricey end ($7+). However, the atmosphere is great and really invites you to relax and have fun.

La Vics

La victoria's taqueria

They say that the city of San Jose bleeds la vics orange sauce. In terms of cheap, tasy and greasy fast food, La Vics is the go-to spot. There isn't many places to sit here during the night as they close the upstairs area, If you can, you should grab a seat and drown your burrito's in the complimentary orange sauce. Note that if you want the sauce to go, it'll cost you $6, which is almost the price of a burrito. Save yourself some cash, sit down and enjoy the food.

Fun fact - the sauce was invented in 1998 and has 11 "herbs and spices" behind the recipe. Several taqueries around the area have their own sauce as well, with Iguanas deserving an honorable mention, but no one does it like La Vics.

That's all folks!

You've reached the end of this post. We hope you enjoyed this itinerary. Cheers!
